Medvedev's inconsistency on the professional circuit - and difficulties with his serving in especial - led to him exiting of the top ten and ultimately splitting with long-time coach his previous coach.
Now training with Johansson and Rohan Goetzke, Medvedev has gradually advanced in the recent weeks - climaxing in a tightly fought three-set win over challenger Moutet.

"This victory is in dedication of my child her name, because the maiden victory I won when my child her name was born was for her."
The tennis star, the former major winner, had been defeated in his past six title deciders, comprising in that event previously this season.
Medvedev's counter-punching play style and frequent reactions on the playing surface had caused some to doubt if his capacity to compete at the elite level was over.
Yet the 29-year-old has altered his approach in recent weeks, attempting to advance forward and perform aggressively, backed up by an better serve.
The champion recovered from a disadvantage in the first set against the tricky opponent, securing four of the final five exchanges to take the lead.
Both players exchanged service breaks in the following set before the challenger, striving for his first ATP Tour title, gained dominance to force a decider.
He defended four early break points in a close deciding set before Medvedev secured a break to fifteen to close out the victory.
Fittingly, Medvedev secured victory with a point at the front of the court, with Moutet unable to manage a shot after over two and a half hours.
