EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other legal developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked efforts to reduce federal homeland security funding to local governments that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The official ruled the case was “a further instance” of tying government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans prior to the holiday period, coinciding with an ongoing border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to accept a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for additional aid, after signing a formal agreement with Washington.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit seeking the stripping of the current president’s name from a prominent cultural institution in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil align with a wider ideology in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy strategies.
