Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

The Australian selection chief the selector has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on 21 November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the prospects of participating.

"It's clear that time is getting short and multiple considerations involved, not only the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he's going to play a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons leading to absences from several home seasons in a short span.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the series.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games in any case. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
