Together Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Consider this a challenge for partners in committed relationships who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your loved one and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. At first glance, it could look like standard biological terror, but within Together exists a deep examination about our choices in loving each other.

An Introductory Film Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for a decade. Married in real life in 2017, the actors infuse a particular energy to their roles, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The story commences when Millie and Tim relocate from the urban environment to the rural area for her career. A somewhat stereotypical story element, of course, but that’s largely where the conventions end. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity takes hold of the pair. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a slow burn horror experience, interspersing moments of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes during something grotesque). Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and presents them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and removed from his support system. He dreads the idea of completely losing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he refrains from painting one partner or the other the obvious villain.

The couple confront the type of challenges that arise in most partnerships after ten years. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor avoids being hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama serve the other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a compelling reason for staying single. Conversely, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the ending inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your significant other and state, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can embark on today.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
