Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System This Season.

The Championships court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Competitors are granted the ability to question specific decisions from the official, echoing the system currently in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step follows just a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
